We Will Bring Change to America

Change doesn’t come from one person, but instead comes from the desire, passion and energy of millions working together for a common purpose, shared vision and compassion for each other. It starts with each and every one of us — in our homes, our communities, with our families, our friends, and our neighbors — we have the responsibility to make a difference. We have a duty to bring change to every corner of our nation and ensure our compassion stands above all else, so that in America — prosperity and opportunity isn’t reserved for the few, but available to all.

Change doesn’t come easy, but the change we seek is worth the fight. We’ve already seen young and old, black and white, men and women, Latino and LGBTQ, and many more — stand up together and push back against an agenda designed to enrich the wealthy and powerful at the expense of the rest of us. We can’t idly stand by when our leaders like Paul Ryan push to take health care away from 23 million Americans to give 306 billion dollars in tax cuts to the top 1%. We can’t look the other way when the House GOP votes to eliminate regulations designed to protect us on Main Street from the greed and risk taking of Wall Street. Instead, we need to rise up in the moment and embrace the movement of change that only we can bring to our towns, states and nation.

Our challenges, struggles and worries are not much different across our nation and our state. We face continued flat wages with increasing automation — the kind of automation that once replaced the assembly line worker in a Kenosha auto plant and now threatens to replace a single-mom working as a customer service rep in Janesville. We worry if we can pay off our own student loans before our daughters and sons become college-aged and begin incurring student loan debt of their own. We struggle to take care of our aging parents and fear we may end up one illness away from losing health insurance for ourselves and our children. We wonder about retirement and if we’ll be able to retire with dignity because we’ve been told Social Security will be gone, pensions unfunded and saving is difficult when you barely make ends meet.

We do not lose hope. We do not lose our resolve. We continue to work hard and forge ahead. That is the American way. Inspired by our nation’s founders, our constitution, our values and the hard work and sacrifice of Americans across generations — we continue to push forward to bring change. We know that what we face today doesn’t have to be our future. We know that when we work together we can overcome. We know that we’ll hear from our critics that people like Paul Ryan are too powerful, have too much money and are too popular to be beaten, but we know that any movement of change started from a single belief — that the impossible was possible.

So I call on you to join me on the difficult path ahead and help bring a new era of change to America. Our agenda will be rooted in our compassion for each other and bring a fresh perspective to the challenges we face across our state and nation. The American people will be at the center of everything we do as we tackle the pressing issues of the day. As former President Barack Obama once said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.” It’s our time and our moment to bring the change that will forever alter the course of our great nation and enrich the lives of Americans for generations. Please join me and spread the word as far and wide as we can. Thank you.
